All children should meet certain milestones within a similar age in the areas of language, social, play, movement, and learning. When children do not reach these milestones or reach them consistently later than expected, this can be an indication of developmental delay. Check out the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) checklist for developmental milestones and their tracking app!

Given there are no biological markers or genetic testing to diagnose Autism, it requires a professional with extensive experience in assessments to identify the best diagnostic tools to use based on the referral information, age, differential diagnoses and gender. There is no one test that can provide an accurate diagnosis, but the diagnostic assessment should include a battery of assessments, detailed history, interview, multiple observations/reports across environments, and more to make the most accurate diagnosis

Parents and caregivers have the ability to truly bring their child’s progress to another level with their committed involvement. Research consistently shows that “parental involvement is the one invariable factor and an integral part of the success of early intervention programs for children with autism” (Ozonoff & Cathcart, 1998). Without parent involvement and consistency across environments, treatment progresses can be easily “undone” or progres can be slowed.

Some children with delayed language may communicate in other ways to get their needs met such as, leading others, using another person’s hand, challenging behavior (screaming, crying, tantrums), repeating what they heard earlier (i.e., echolalia), and more.

Research shows if therapy starts early, outcomes are significantly improved over the lifetime as the first 5 years of life are critical for neurological development. During this time the brain is developing at high speed, making it easier to learn.
Typically psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors can diagnose Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and other neurodiverse conditions. However, a more comprehensive diagnostic evaluation would include a multidisciplinary team (e.g., speech and language pathologist, psychologist, occupational therapist, etc) with a battery of assessments.
